Go Button Media’s The Animal Within greenlit for second season

Toronto-based Go Button Media has received the greenlight for a second season of The Animal Within.

The approval comes from its Munich-based distributor Autentic – which holds global rights to the series excluding Canada – and the series’ Canadian broadcast partner Super Channel.

The 6 x 60-minute series enters production in March and is set for release later this year, according to a Friday (Feb. 21) release. The series combines science and natural history to explore the inner workings of some of Earth’s most fascinating creatures.

The Animal Within was first commissioned by Autentic in October 2020. In December 2021, Edmonton-headquartered Super Channel extended its partnership with Go Button in the form of four more factual series, including the acquisition of The Animal Within.

In September 2024, Go Button Media announced that it will deliver six series through a partnership with Autentic and Super Channel. The second season of The Animal Within represents one of those commissions, with Secrets of Ancient Structures (6 x 60 minutes) named the first to come out of the agreement and which is set to air this summer. In total, Go Button will deliver a 36-hour factual slate through six series, each six hours in length, over the next three years.

Both series are part of Autentic Distributions’ London TV Screenings slate, which runs from Feb. 24 to 28.

The first 6 x 60-minute season of The Animal Within was licensed by Autentic to more than 20 territories, with broadcasters such as National Geographic and Japan’s NHK.

Go Button Media has inked a deal with Autentic and Canadian broadcast partner Super Channel for several titles, including Secrets of Ancient Structures.

The collaboration includes the delivery of six series, each six hours in duration, over the next three years. Autentic will handle the titles’ global distribution outside of Canada.

The first greenlit title is Secrets of Ancient Structures, which takes viewers around the globe and across time to examine some of the most remarkable achievements by ancient civilizations—from medieval fortresses that reached for the heavens to crypts and catacombs that plumbed the unexplored depths of the Earth.

Secrets of Ancient Structures will be delivered in the summer of 2025) with international distribution (excluding Canada) handled by Autentic Distribution.

Daniel Oron, co-founder and executive producer at Go Button Media, commented:

“Being a boutique production company during a decline in the worldwide industry is challenging. However, we’ve been able to evolve a strategic approach that has allowed us to grow and continue to produce creative and impactful factual content that meets the programming needs of our valued clients.

From The Animal Within, our very first series for Autentic, we knew we had found an entirely compatible business partner who enjoyed collaborating as much as we, and Super Channel, do. We are thrilled to be working on this new slate together and to jumpstart production following the greenlight for Secrets of Ancient Structures.”

Dr. Patrick Hörl, managing director at Autentic, said: “We take great pride in consistently delivering high-quality content to the international market and collaborating with the very best partners to achieve this. Go Button’s previous productions have performed exceptionally well globally, so extending our partnership with this longer-term deal was a natural choice, ensuring a steady stream of engaging programming over the next three years. What truly distinguishes this collaboration is the excellent cooperation in the editorial process, and we deeply appreciate the creative vision and storytelling expertise that the team at Go Button brings to every project. We’re excited to work with them and Super Channel on these upcoming projects and to bring them to a wide international audience.”

Kim Ball, chief content officer at Super Channel, added: “Whatever the subject, Go Button never fails to deliver engaging factual series that entertain and inform. We are excited to come onboard for this new content slate and look forward to working with the Go Button and Autentic teams again to explore some fascinating new topics.”

BossaNova Media Orders More Mysteries Of The Ancient Dead

BossaNova Media has greenlit a second six-hour season of Go Button Media’s Mysteries of the Ancient Dead.

The new season will feature three stories in each episode that reveal ancient civilizations’ attitudes toward death. It will cover the Nubian mini pyramids in Sudan, which allowed common people to be buried like pharaohs; the hanging burials of the Igorot tribe in Sagada in the Philippines, where coffins have been mounted in vertical graveyards for thousands of years; and more.

It will also explore the ancient Kurgan burial mounds for the rider-nomads of the Russian steppe and the cave child burials in Makpan, Indonesia, which involve strange post-mortem rituals.

The second season sees Canadian partner Super Channel return as commissioning broadcaster. BossaNova Media handles international distribution outside of Canada. The new season is set for delivery later in 2024.

“BossaNova’s first commission was Mysteries of the Ancient Dead back in 2022, as we could see that Go Button understood how to make it look top class, execute on time and on budget,” said Paul Heaney, CEO of BossaNova. “Second time around, we’re looking forward to more of the same! The team at Go Button is a polished operation that we trust.”

Daniel Oron, co-founder and executive producer at Go Button Media, commented,

“With its compelling combination of science, mystery and ancient history, Mysteries of the Ancient Dead proved an extremely popular series and sold to many broadcasters, including ZDF in Germany and A+E Networks in the U.K. We thoroughly enjoy collaborating with Paul and the BossaNova team, and with science and history such established sweet spots for Go Button, we are thrilled to get this green light for a second season. BossaNova has fast gained a reputation for creating premium originals with wide-ranging appeal, so we are excited to produce additional content for its growing slate and proud to call them a partner.”

“Mysteries of the Ancient Dead has been a strong addition to our factual slate, and we had no hesitation in bringing another season of this compelling series to our viewers as part of our ongoing partnership with Go Button Media,” added Kim Ball, chief content officer at Super Channel. “Go Button consistently delivers high-quality, intriguing content, and this new season is sure to be no exception.”
