Canada’s Super Channel orders slate of factual content from Go Button Media

Canadian pay TV network Super Channel has commissioned Toronto-based prodco Go Button Media to develop a slate of unscripted series.

The deal will see Go Button develop six series, comprising 36 hours of content from the areas of history, paranormal, engineering and science.

Go Button will produce the content – not linked to any specific titles, as yet – within a two-year period, with ZDF-owned Off the Fence handling international distribution.

It comes after Super Channel, Off the Fence and Go Button last year partnered on the six-part Second World War history series Forgotten Frontlines. More recently Super Channel aired Go Button’s six-part factual series Deadly Science.

Go Button, founded by showrunners Daniel Oron and Natasha Ryan, has been behind series such as Mysteries of the Ancient Dead, Secret Societies: In the Shadows and Secret Nazi Expeditions.

Loren Baxter, head of acquisitions at Off The Fence, said: “Forgotten Frontlines worked very well for us last year, so we are now keen to replicate and scale that success across our key content pillars of ‘yesterday,’ ‘today’ and ‘tomorrow.’

“This new partnership, alongside Super Channel, will not only give us six new series to sell but, as a commissioner, we also have a fantastic opportunity to work closely with Daniel and the team to marry Go Button’s creative ideas with our own market insights and ensure each series readily meets current international demand.”

Jackie Pardy, chief content officer at Super Channel, added: “Go Button Media has become one of our most valued suppliers of factual programming in recent years, so we had no hesitation in extending our relationship.”

  • Realscreen: German distributor Autentic orders new factual series from Go Button Media

German distributor and prodco Autentic has commissioned four factual series from Toronto’s Go Button Media, expanding their existing partnership.

The Munich-based company will help finance the series and trigger additional funding as the commissioner. Autentic will, in turn, hold exclusive territory rights and worldwide distribution rights.

The four titles are Deadly Science (6 x 52 min.; pictured), about scientists who have died in the pursuit of knowledge, such as Marie Curie; Mapping Disaster (6 x 52 min.), which explores how catastrophes might be avoided in the future; Spies that Mapped the World (4 x 47 min.), about conspiracies around the Cold War; and a second season of Colossal Machines (6 x 45 min.), which looks at the inner workings of large-scale machinery. All four series will be produced this year.

The first season of Colossal Machines was acquired by Super Channel for broadcast in Canada. The channel has also served as a commissioner for Go Button Media, ordering original series such as Secret Nazi Expeditions and Forgotten Frontlines.

“The cooperation with Go Button is one of the best examples for our content strategy, as it confirms how valuable it is for us to build long-term partnerships for our channel business as well as our production and distribution activities,” said Alexandra Böhm, Autentic’s head of international coproduction, in a statement.

“Our continued expanding relationship with Autentic not only strengthens our global business, it also fuels our creative output by challenging us to develop and produce exciting new angles on high demand genres,” added Go Button Media executive producer Daniel Oron.

Toronto-based Go Button Media has announced that Super Channel in Canada has commissioned its new historical docuseries, Secret Nazi Expeditions, with Cineflix Rights on board as its international distribution partner with a focus on pre-sales.

The 6 x 60-minute series focuses on the work of an elite team of Nazi scientists who searched the far reaches of the globe for ancient artifacts alleged to possess mystical powers in the name of Hitler’s regime.

“Super Channel has been an incredibly supportive broadcaster to our business this year, so we couldn’t be more pleased to move into production with them on this second history series,” Daniel Oron, Go Button Media’s co-founder and series executive producer, said in a release. “We are also thrilled to be working with Cineflix Rights for the first time. The team was extremely enthusiastic about this new series from the first conversation and, given Cineflix’s impressive track record and extensive international network, I have every confidence that Secret Nazi Expeditions will soon find a raft of excellent homes across the world.”

Secret Nazi Expeditions is set to begin production soon. It’s Go Button’s second Super Channel Fuse Original commission this year, following the World War Two series Forgotten Frontlines (6 x 60 minutes), co-commissioned by SBS Australia and Off The Fence.
