Go Button Media strikes content deal with Off the Fence, Super Channel

Toronto-based prodco Go Button Media is extending its partnership with international distributor Off the Fence (OTF) and Canadian pay-TV network Super Channel with a new deal that will see Go Button deliver six further factual series over a two-year period.

The deal follows on from the success that OTF and Super Channel enjoyed with Go Button’s recent factual title, the WWII docuseries Forgotten Frontlines. Under the terms of the agreement, Go Button will produce six series (totaling 36 hours of content) across the unscripted genres that it specializes in, including history, paranormal, engineering and science.

“Super Channel has long been a supporter of Go Button’s projects, and we are elated to be making new programs for its audience on our home turf, said Go Button Media co-founder and executive producer Daniel Oron (pictured). “In addition, following a previous project, we are especially thrilled to extend and deepen our relationship with Off the Fence, creating a range of new factual content for this dynamic company to take to broadcasters and platforms around the world.”

“Forgotten Frontlines worked very well for us last year, so we are now keen to replicate and scale that success across our key content pillars of ‘Yesterday, ‘Today’ and ‘Tomorrow,” added OTF head of acquisitions Loren Baxter. “This new partnership, alongside Super Channel, will not only give us six new series to sell, but, as a commissioner, we also have a fantastic opportunity to work closely with Daniel and the team to marry Go Button’s creative ideas with our own market insights and ensure each series readily meets current international demand.”

Hollywood Suite acquires No Roses on a Sailor’s Grave documentary

Canadian broadcaster Hollywood Suite acquired the award-winning documentary No Roses on a Sailor’s Grave, production company Go Button Media announced on Monday (Aug. 23).

CBC & Radio-Canada Distribution, meanwhile, took the worldwide rights, excluding Canada, for the documentary (pictured). The CBC will soon announce the film’s launch into the global market.

The documentary tells the story of a lost World War II ship, and how a young archeologist and the last survivor of the wreck work together to recover the ship from forgotten history, more than 70 years later.

The ship, LCH185, was part of the first wave on Sword Beach on D-Day. It helped protect the landing beaches from German attack for two weeks, until it was struck by an acoustic mine. LCH185 sank, taking all but a few surviving crew members with it. Patrick Thomas, a veteran telegraphist in the British Royal Navy who was on that ship, has lived with the memory ever since then.

John Henry Phillips, a 25-year-old British archaeologist, promised Thomas that he will find the lost, wrecked ship and see that a memorial is built for its missing crew. The documentary film follows this work.

“With only a small number of World War II veterans still among us, it is critical we help tell and record these stories before they move on from living memory,” said Daniel Oron of Go Button Media, and the director and executive producer of the film, in a news release.

Sharon Stevens, vice president of programming at Hollywood Suite, added that the film mixes history and personal testimony, and that with time running out to hear WWII stories first hand, opportunities to see a film like this are becoming rarer.

No Roses on a Sailor’s Grave was an official selection at several film festivals, and won Best Feature Documentary at the Sweden Film Awards, Best Narrative at the Amsterdam World International Film Festival, Best Director: Documentary at the Berlin Indie Film Festival and Angeles Documentaries Festival, as well as Best Feature Documentary at the Rome Independent Prisma Awards and Angeles Documentaries Festival.

The feature documentary is scheduled for a worldwide TV premiere on Nov. 11 at 9 p.m. ET.

Weathering the storm: Producers on keeping the ‘wheels running’

Producers, broadcasters and distributors are venturing into largely uncharted territory as the COVID-19 pandemic upends production activities across the globe.

With ‘Weathering the Storm,’ Realscreen will examine the impact of the disruption upon various sectors of the non-fiction screen content industry, and reveal how different companies and stakeholders in the business are coping with the changing landscape.

Daniel Oron, co-founder and executive producer of Toronto’s Go Button Media, says the company is focused on “continuing the supply chain” for broadcasters.

“If you look at our industry, basically there’s a supply chain of television, right? It’s much like any supply chain. It’s conceived somewhere, then it’s developed, then it’s manufactured, then it’s sold,” he says. “We can’t, as an industry, flick a switch and then instantly go into production that day we’re allowed out of the house.”

The objective for Go Button, and other producers in the same boat, is to (as much as possible) keep development and production firing on all cylinders.

“How do we produce content in spurts over the next cycle of, say, 12 to 18 months that allows broadcasters to continue to function without relying wholly on their library or acquisitions that they are picking up from their competitors or other networks around the world?” Oron (pictured above with co-founder Natasha Ryan) says.
