WWII veteran’s quest to find D-Day shipwreck and build a memorial to lost shipmates

EXCLUSIVE: Seventy years after she was sunk off the French coast in the wake of D-Day, a chance encounter launched an extraordinary project to locate the wreck of a British ship… and commemorate those who went down with her.

The 158-foot-long headquarters ship, one of thousands that set forth across the Channel, was part of the first wave heading for Sword Beach in Normandy.

“I had certain qualms in my stomach, but you very quickly dismissed that because you’re busy,” Patrick Thomas, now 98, recalls.

“When we arrived there initially, we didn’t get a very friendly welcome.

“The Germans were rattling machine gun bullets on the hull. I saw the infantry running up the beach and sometimes they’d get shot and go down.”

For the next two weeks, in the heat of battle, LCH185 played a key role in defending the landing beaches and saving survivors from other Allied vessels, which were taking a fearful pounding from relentless German attacks.

Then, on June 25, Patrick’s world changed forever when LCH185 was hit by an acoustic mine. The veteran recollects that cataclysmic moment.

“I didn’t hear the explosion, but it must have lifted the stern up and driven the bow under. The next thing I knew, we were underwater.”

  • Go Button Media strikes content deal with Off the Fence, Super Channel

Go Button Media strikes content deal with Off the Fence, Super Channel

Toronto-based prodco Go Button Media is extending its partnership with international distributor Off the Fence (OTF) and Canadian pay-TV network Super Channel with a new deal that will see Go Button deliver six further factual series over a two-year period.

The deal follows on from the success that OTF and Super Channel enjoyed with Go Button’s recent factual title, the WWII docuseries Forgotten Frontlines. Under the terms of the agreement, Go Button will produce six series (totaling 36 hours of content) across the unscripted genres that it specializes in, including history, paranormal, engineering and science.

“Super Channel has long been a supporter of Go Button’s projects, and we are elated to be making new programs for its audience on our home turf, said Go Button Media co-founder and executive producer Daniel Oron (pictured). “In addition, following a previous project, we are especially thrilled to extend and deepen our relationship with Off the Fence, creating a range of new factual content for this dynamic company to take to broadcasters and platforms around the world.”

“Forgotten Frontlines worked very well for us last year, so we are now keen to replicate and scale that success across our key content pillars of ‘Yesterday, ‘Today’ and ‘Tomorrow,” added OTF head of acquisitions Loren Baxter. “This new partnership, alongside Super Channel, will not only give us six new series to sell, but, as a commissioner, we also have a fantastic opportunity to work closely with Daniel and the team to marry Go Button’s creative ideas with our own market insights and ensure each series readily meets current international demand.”

  • Call Me Mother’s Dallas Dixon Dishes On Season 2 & The Power Of Drag

Call Me Mother’s Dallas Dixon Dishes On Season 2 & The Power Of Drag

Speaking with PRIDE the host teases working with drag icons and which queen he’d like to call mother.

Hosting Call Me Mother is a perfect gig for Dallas Dixon, who has returned for the sophomore season of the drag reality TV competition series. For one thing, he’s a lifelong fan of the art of drag, who fondly recalls escaping his small town to go visit drag shows in Toronto, where he found himself fascinated by the artistry on display. But it also takes a lot of charisma and energy to stand out among a group of drag queens, but fortunately Dallas has a seemingly endless supply of both.

For those initiated with the OutTV series, up-and-coming drag queens and kings compete for the title of “First Child of Drag”, but to do so they first have to earn their spot in one of the drag houses led by three icons of drag: Peppermint (House of Dulcet), Crystal (House of Glass), and Barbada de Barbades (House of Harmonie), who each mentor the queens they select to join their families.
